Perugia Hospital installs advanced Photon Counting CT scanner

The Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia has inaugurated a new Photon Counting Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, one of the most innovative diagnostic imaging technologies currently available in Italy. The equipment, which is the tenth such installation in an Italian public hospital, allows for high-definition imaging and total body scans completed in just 5 to 10 seconds.

The technology, donated by Fondazione Perugia, represents a total investment of 1.985 million euros. This includes 1.785 million euros from the Foundation for the technology itself and 200,000 euros from the hospital for necessary structural and system upgrades.

Unlike traditional systems, the Photon Counting CT detects individual X-ray photons and distinguishes them by energy, providing more detailed information on tissue composition. The system also integrates artificial intelligence to enhance diagnostic capabilities. According to Michele Duranti, Director of the Department of Diagnostics and Radiology, the technology enables the observation of minute anatomical details and is particularly beneficial for fragile patients who may struggle to hold their breath or maintain specific positions during scans.
