Perugia prosecutors investigate 22 medics over newborn's death

The Perugia Prosecutor's Office has placed 22 healthcare workers under investigation following the death of newborn Pietro Porzi on September 16. The investigation, coordinated by prosecutor Massimo Casucci, follows a complaint filed by the infant's parents.

The child was born at the San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Foligno, where complications reportedly arose during delivery, including the possible use of a vacuum extractor. Due to a rapid deterioration in his condition, the infant was urgently transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia, where he subsequently died.

The medical professionals involved, working across both hospitals, face allegations of complicity in manslaughter and culpable responsibility for death or personal injury in a healthcare setting. Authorities have seized medical records from both facilities to reconstruct the clinical course of the pregnancy and the subsequent care provided. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death and clarify any link between the medical assistance received and the infant's passing.
