Peru's Arequipa Region Advances Megaport Corío Project
The Corío megaport, planned for Punta de Bombón in the Arequipa region, is being promoted as a strategic South Pacific port capable of handling post‑Panamax vessels due to its natural depth of 19–29 meters. Regional Governor Rohel Sánchez Sánchez described it as "the megaport of the south of Peru; the megaport of South America" and said the project will evolve into a fully planned port city with an industrial zone, research facilities, a special economic zone and multimodal connections.
The government has secured legal title to 34,596 ha and completed a demand study indicating that capturing 40 % of southern Brazil’s exports would sustain the port. A master plan is pending approval, after which private investment through public‑private partnerships and asset projects will fund construction. Analysts also note the project's geopolitical relevance, outlining potential financing scenarios from the United States, China or a multipolar model to preserve Peru's strategic autonomy.
