Peru's central bank chief Julio Velarde considers staying after term ends July 28

Julio Velarde, president of the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú (BCRP), confirmed that his current mandate will conclude on 28 July. He said no presidential candidates have contacted him about a possible continuation in the role.

Velarde noted that although he had previously been inclined to step down after nearly two decades at the helm, he would weigh any offer to remain. He emphasized that any reappointment would depend on the incoming president’s nomination and Senate ratification. Velarde also pointed to Peru’s solid macro‑economic fundamentals and the prospect of a stronger recovery, highlighting the central bank’s low‑inflation record during his tenure since 2006, which investors are closely monitoring.
