Peru's COER and Honduras' SAG roll out drought aid for livestock amid El Niño impacts

In Peru's Cusco region, the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) has begun preventive actions to mitigate the expected effects of the El Niño phenomenon, warning that the drought could extend through December. Measures include distributing feed for camelids, enhancing irrigation technology, and implementing water‑harvesting projects to optimise water use. COER chief Miguel Oscco said, “Estamos ya varios meses trabajando, vamos a continuar con ello para que el impacto en esta temporada de sequías no sea de la magnitud que se espera.”

In Honduras, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) reported that more than 200 cattle have died due to the drought. Minister Moisés Molina announced immediate food aid for affected farmers and outlined a four‑year livestock support programme that could reach up to 50 million lempiras, aiming to improve animal nutrition and build resilience against future dry spells. Molina stated, “Le quiero decir con toda honestidad… están muriendo vacas…”.
