Peru's Cusco Amazonía faces road bottlenecks despite accounting for over 20% of regional agriculture

More than half of Cusco's territory lies in the Amazonía, a fertile area that supplies over 20% of the region's agricultural output. The province of La Convención alone hosts 33,559 producers, with coffee accounting for 13.6% of regional production (S 121 million) and cacao about 6% (S 54 million). Together, these commodities generate more than US 46 million in export earnings.

Only 22 km of the 920 km road network in La Convención are paved (2.4%), forcing farmers to endure longer travel times, higher logistics costs, and frequent loss of perishable goods. Seasonal rains further degrade the unpaved routes, blocking transport. Officials cite the need for an integrated infrastructure plan, highlighting the La Verónica tunnel project, which aims to cut the Cusco‑Quillabamba travel time from seven hours to two‑three hours. Investment in road paving and logistics is presented as essential to unlock the Amazonía's economic potential and improve livelihoods for thousands of families.
