Peru's JNE condemns sexualized insults against its president
The National Jury of Elections (JNE) in Peru has issued a formal condemnation regarding offensive remarks and sexual connotations directed at its president, Roberto Burneo. The statements were made by comedian and former presidential candidate Carlos Álvarez during a political event in the Lurín district.
According to the JNE, Álvarez reproduced derogatory expressions previously used by Rafael López Aliaga, leader of the Renovación Popular party. The electoral body emphasized that while political criticism is a legitimate part of democracy, personal insults and attacks on human dignity are unjustifiable and contribute to the deterioration of public debate.
The institution expressed particular concern because the comments were made in a public space in the presence of children and adolescents. Consequently, the JNE announced it will refer the matter to the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, the Ombudsman's Office, and the Public Ministry to evaluate appropriate legal actions. The case will also be reviewed by the JNE's Public Prosecutor's Office.
