Peru's JNE Sets Deadline for Candidate Resignations Ahead of 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) has announced that political parties and candidates must submit any resignations or withdraw their lists for the 2026 regional and municipal elections by Wednesday, 5 August. This deadline allows special electoral jurors to continue evaluating the candidacies that will remain on the ballot. Subsequent key dates include a 20 August deadline for jurors to resolve first‑instance challenges, a 4 September deadline for appeals, and a final 5 September deadline for the JNE to declare the definitive list of candidates. The elections, scheduled for 4 October, will see 13,148 regional and municipal officials elected, including governors, mayors, and councilors.

A separate controversy has emerged in Lima, where candidate Luis Rubio Idrogo of Renovación Popular submitted an irrevocable resignation just before the 5 September deadline. The move is viewed as a strategy to allow Rafael López Aliaga, barred from immediate re‑election as mayor, to assume the mayoralty by being listed as the first councilor on Rubio’s ticket. The JNE is tasked with determining whether this maneuver respects the spirit of electoral law or constitutes an abuse of the rules.
