Peru's July Fiestas Patrias bonus rules and workers' spending plans
Peruvian labor law requires employers to pay a full‑semester bonus (gratificación) by 15 July for all employees who worked the January‑June period, with an extra 9 % for EsSalud affiliates or 6.75 % for EPS affiliates. The calculation includes all remunerative concepts such as family allowance and, if regular, commissions. Deductions are only allowed for court‑ordered obligations, such as child support, up to 60 % of the amount. Non‑compliant firms face fines ranging from S/ 2,408 for small firms to S/ 139,742 for larger ones.
A Bumeran survey of Peruvian workers found that 35 % intend to use the bonus to repay debts, 25 % plan to save, 14 % will invest in education, and 7 % consider financial investments. Sixty percent receive the payment on the statutory deadline, while the rest get it earlier. The bonus reaches workers across many sectors, notably gastronomy, tourism, management, mining, health and insurance, with 13 % receiving more than S/ 5,000.
