President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella announced Ana María Vesga as Colombia’s Minister of Health and Social Protection, to assume office on 7 August 2026. Vesga, a lawyer with a master’s in Health Economics from Pompeu Fabra University, previously served as executive president of ACEMI, the association of contributory‑regime health insurers.

The appointment has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers, notably former health minister and senator Carolina Corcho of the Pacto Histórico, who called it an “insurmountable conflict of interest” because Vesga formerly represented the EPS she will now regulate. Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara defended the choice, saying Vesga will recover intervened EPS and clean the health regulator. The Pacto Histórico cited article 3 of Law 2013 of 2019, which limits former executives from influencing decisions that could benefit their former organisations.

Vesga is expected to lead a shock plan to improve timely care, medication supply and the financial stability of the health sector, marking a policy shift from the previous Petro administration.
