Peru's northern coast faces record rainfall due to El Niño
The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) has issued a red alert for the northern coastal regions of Tumbes and Piura due to extreme rainfall. Between October 1 and October 26, precipitation levels in Tumbes reached between 70 and 80 times the region's normal values.
Specific station reports indicate that El Salto in Tumbes recorded 102 mm of rain in a 24-hour period. Other significant measurements include 45.2 mm in Puerto Pizarro, 34.7 mm in Hualcuy, and 24.5 mm in Paimas. These extreme weather conditions are linked to the El Niño phenomenon, which the National Ensemble Forecasting Center (ENFEN) predicts could persist until the autumn of 2027.
In addition to the red alert for the north, Senamhi has issued warnings for several other departments, including Apurímac, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Puno. Forecasts for the southern highlands include potential snowfall at altitudes above 3,900 meters, accompanied by electrical discharges and wind gusts of approximately 40 km/h.
