Peru readies 2026 regional elections, selects poll workers, tackles quake‑damaged sites

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) held a public lottery on 24 July, selecting roughly 809,000 citizens to serve as members of the poll tables for Peru’s regional and municipal elections scheduled for 4 October 2026. The selected voters can verify their status via the online platform https://consultaelectoral.onpe.gob.pe. Selection criteria gave priority to candidates under 65 years old, without disabilities and with higher education, while excluding political candidates, officials, and armed forces personnel.

Regional electoral offices (ODPE) in Puno and Tacna have opened service desks to field public inquiries, coordinate training and logistics, and have each drawn thousands of poll‑table members—7,428 in Puno and 9,030 in Tacna—who will staff the voting stations across the country. The offices also announced a three‑day window for challenges (tachas) to the lists.

Separately, the Special Electoral Jury in Huancayo reported that eleven school facilities, housing 77 voting tables and 22,416 registered voters, suffered damage in a magnitude‑5.1 earthquake on 18 July. Authorities are inspecting these sites to ensure they meet safety standards before being used on election day.
