Keiko Fujimori promises sweeping security reforms as Peru readies new government

President‑elect Keiko Fujimori said her first months in office will focus on restoring order and combating organized crime. Her plan includes reinforcing borders, deploying the armed forces to strategic zones, building four high‑capacity prisons and a high‑security facility, expanding flagrante courts nationwide, and amending the Penal and Procedural Codes. A recent Datum poll found 73 % of Peruvians consider public safety the top priority for the new administration. Crime data for the year show 126 attacks on public transport, 1,102 homicides and 10,458 extortion reports, underscoring the security challenge. Analysts stress that effective implementation of the security strategy will be crucial for the millions who rely on public transport.
