Peruvian Air Force evacuates postpartum hemorrhage patient from remote Ucayali community

A 21‑year‑old mother, Bernicia Viciano Víctor, suffered a severe postpartum hemorrhage caused by placental retention and uterine atony after a home birth in the remote native community of Maimpironi, Atalaya, Ucayali. The Peruvian Air Force (FAP) dispatched a helicopter in an aeromedical evacuation, coordinated by the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health under the existing SIS‑FAP agreement and ordered by President Keiko Fujimori Higuchi. The patient was airlifted to Hospital Manuel Ángel Higa Arakaki in Satipo, Junín, where she is receiving specialized care covered by the Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS). The operation underscores the inter‑agency response capability for medical emergencies in hard‑to‑reach areas of Peru.
