Peruvian ambassador appointments spark political debate

The designation of new Peruvian ambassadors has sparked significant debate within the Peruvian Congress and among public intellectuals. A central point of discussion is the imminent appointment of Álvaro Vargas Llosa as the ambassador to Washington, D.C., under the administration of Keiko Fujimori.

Writer Jaime Bayly expressed reservations regarding the appointment, suggesting that while Vargas Llosa possesses notable qualities, accepting the role could compromise his independence. Bayly argued that an ambassador loses much of their autonomy and moral capital because they must answer directly to the President and the Foreign Minister, effectively representing the current government rather than just the nation.

Within the Peruvian Congress, political factions are divided. The Fuerza Popular party has defended the appointments, citing the professional experience and capacity of the nominees. Conversely, members of the Juntos por el Perú party have criticized the selections, alleging that some appointees have close ties to Fujimorismo and suggesting the moves may be political favors.
