Peruvian artist creates hyperrealistic statue of Pope Leo XIV
Peruvian sculptor Walter Huamán, known professionally as Walt Wizard, has created a hyperrealistic, life-sized statue of Pope Leo XIV in Lima. Standing 1.75 meters tall, the sculpture features intricate details such as skin textures, a golden ring, and specific footwear, achieved through six months of work using medical-grade silicone.
The project is part of the series ‘Peru: Faces of Faith and Bravery’. The artist was inspired by a personal encounter with the Pope at St. Peter’s Square in November, where he presented a sculpture of Jesus Christ. The statue has become a local attraction in Lima, with additional figures of the Pontiff planned for Chiclayo and Callao.
The unveiling of the artwork coincides with reports from the Vatican regarding the Pope’s health, specifically a surgical procedure to remove a portion of his lung following a lung cancer diagnosis. This news has prompted prayers from the faithful in Peru.
