Peruvian Artists Launch Nationwide Itinerant Mural Residency

The Despierta initiative, founded by muralist Jade Rivera in 2019, expands its community‑focused art program into a traveling residency that will bring Peruvian and international artists to interior regions of Peru. Building on earlier projects that helped heal Pisco after the 2007 earthquake, Despierta has already created large‑scale murals and workshops in schools and public spaces across Huancayo, Junín, Áncash and Lima. The upcoming residency will stage new murals, dance, theatre and photography workshops, aiming to democratize culture, foster creative thinking among children, and reinforce local identity.

The program seeks to sustain a dialogue between contemporary art and regional traditions, positioning muralism as a tool for social transformation in areas where access to artistic experiences is limited.
