Peruvian Artists Protest Law Creating Professional Artists College

Artists, musicians and cultural managers gathered in Lima to denounce Peru's Law No. 32645, which establishes a Professional Artists College and requires members to hold a university degree or professional licence. Protesters argue the law institutionalises censorship, excludes popular and community‑based creators, and criminalises traditional folk art. They claim the measure threatens artistic freedom, marginalises self‑taught and family‑trained artists, and could be used to control political dissent, citing the case of former national prosecutor Delia Espinosa.

The demonstrators called for the repeal of the law and for a national campaign to protect cultural diversity, warning that the new college would become an elitist gatekeeper rather than a supportive body for the arts.
