Peruvian authorities address threats to archaeological heritage

Cultural authorities in Peru are addressing recent incidents involving the potential damage to archaeological sites. In the Nasca region, the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Ica inspected the Cabeza de Cura sector in Vista Alegre following reports of possible alterations to the protected area. Investigators found accumulations of rocks likely caused by blasting, tracks from heavy machinery such as excavators, and modifications to land adjacent to the Paredones site. The administrator of the area was ordered to cease all work until valid authorization from the Ministry of Culture is obtained.

In La Libertad, the DDC La Libertad responded to acts of vandalism at the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex. Graffiti applied with aerosol was removed from a wall in the Chol An walled set, known as Palacio Rivero. Technical evaluations confirmed that the original structures, a UNESCO World Heritage site, were not damaged because the paint was applied to a “sacrificial material”—a protective layer of modern adobe and mud designed to preserve the ancient walls. Officials condemned the vandalism and emphasized the importance of protecting the site’s historical legacy.
