Peruvian Cajón Day Celebrated on August 2

Peru officially marks August 2 as Día del Cajón Peruano, a holiday that honors the wooden percussion instrument central to the nation’s criolla and Afro‑Peruvian music. The Peruvian Congress established the date in 2018, and in 2014 the Organization of American States named the cajón “Instrument of Peru for the Americas.” The celebration highlights the instrument’s colonial‑era origins among enslaved Africans, its evolution into a symbol of national identity, and ongoing efforts to teach and preserve the tradition for future generations.

The holiday also recognizes the contributions of master cajoneros and promotes cultural research and education, reinforcing the cajón’s status as living cultural heritage.
