Enrique Espejo ‘Yuca’ dies at 75, iconic Peruvian comedian

Peruvian comedian Enrique Eduardo Espejo Peña, widely known by his stage name ‘Yuca’, has passed away at the age of 75. His death was confirmed by his longtime colleague and friend, Jorge Benavides.

Espejo’s health had been in decline following a domestic accident in March 2025, which resulted in a severe head injury and required intensive care. Although he eventually left the ICU, he remained bedridden and in delicate condition until his passing.

With a career spanning over four decades, Espejo was a staple of Peruvian television. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with the program ‘Risas y Salsa’ and later became a key member of various comedy productions alongside Benavides, including ‘JB Noticias’, ‘La Paisana Jacinta’, and ‘El Especial del Humor’. He also appeared in films such as ‘Asu Mare 2’.

Colleagues and fellow entertainers, including Claudia Serpa and Lucy Bacigalupo, have expressed their condolences, mourning the loss of a performer noted for his spontaneity and improvisational skills.
