Peruvian Congress spends 2.65 million soles on luxury dining hall renovations

The Peruvian Congress has faced scrutiny following reports that approximately 2.65 million soles were spent on the extensive renovation of its dining halls. The project, which was officially tendered as an 'integral maintenance service,' involved a complete restructuring of the spaces located under the Parque Congresal.

The renovation included replacing old tiles with sintered stone and porcelain, installing ornamental moldings with LED lighting, and adding decorative mirrors and carpets. A significant portion of the expenditure was directed toward a dining room reserved exclusively for lawmakers, which was outfitted with luxury items including Louis XV style furniture, carved wooden tables, and green leather chairs.

The project was approved in April 2026 by the Board of Directors led by then-president and current senator Fernando Rospigliosi. While some legislators defended the work as necessary modernization, others and legal experts have questioned the transparency of the contract. Legal specialist Cecilia Ruiz noted that the 'integral maintenance' designation did not accurately reflect the scale of the redesign and luxury upgrades performed.
