Peruvian exporters face pressure from new US tariffs

The Association of Exporters (ADEX) has warned that new tariffs are placing significant pressure on Peruvian exporters. Out of the US$10.7 billion exported to the United States last year, approximately US$5.3 billion of that trade volume is now subject to a new 12.5% tariff rate.

César Tello, president of ADEX, noted that the affected products include blueberries, table grapes, and garments, while products such as avocado, coffee, and cocoa remain exempt. The association expressed concern that these increased costs reduce competitiveness against international rivals.

ADEX is calling for bilateral negotiations between the Peruvian government and U.S. authorities to reduce the tariff. While the ideal scenario is a return to the 0% rate established under the Free Trade Agreement, the group suggested that reducing the rate to 10% would provide much-needed relief. These tariff pressures are compounded by high logistics costs stemming from infrastructure gaps and cargo mobilization difficulties.
