Peruvian Government says pardon for ex-president Pedro Castillo not under consideration

Prime Minister Luis Arroyo told RPP that the current administration has no plans to grant a presidential pardon to former president Pedro Castillo, who is serving an 11‑year‑plus sentence for his role in the failed December 7 2022 coup attempt. Arroyo said a pardon cannot be on the agenda while Castillo’s conviction is not final and no firm sentence exists.

Ombudsman Josué Gutiérrez also declined to comment on a specific pardon for Castillo. He noted that the Constitution makes granting "gracias presidenciales" a prerogative of the president and said any such measures being evaluated would target elderly inmates in general, not a particular individual.

Both officials underscored that no official proposal to free Castillo is being examined by the government.
