Julian Curo Churata, a 47-year-old Peruvian citizen, died on September 29 while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The circumstances surrounding his death remain undetermined as authorities await autopsy results.
Curo had lived in the United States for 17 years and worked in the construction sector with a valid work permit while his legal status was being processed. He was detained by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 27 following traffic violations and a financial dispute. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, approximately 1,800 kilometers away from his family.
ICE reported that Curo was taken to a hospital in Louisiana after experiencing unspecified medical complications. His widow, Verónica Ramírez, has stated that he was in good health prior to his detention and is demanding transparency regarding the cause of death. She has launched a community fundraising campaign to cover funeral and repatriation costs for their two children.
