Peruvian Navy Honors Admiral Miguel Grau on 192nd Birth Anniversary

On July 27, the Peruvian Navy held a formal ceremony at the Naval School to mark the 192nd anniversary of Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario’s birth. The event highlighted Grau’s legacy as a naval strategist, humanitarian, and national hero.

Born in Piura in 1834, Grau entered the navy as a youth, later commanding the monitor Huáscar during the War of the Pacific. He earned the nickname “Caballero de los Mares” after rescuing the crew of the Chilean corvette Esmeralda following the Battle of Iquique and sending a respectful letter and personal items to the widow of its commander, Arturo Prat. Grau also served as a deputy for Paita, advocating stronger naval resources. He fell at the Battle of Angamos in 1879. The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to the values he embodied—honor, bravery, humanity, and duty—inviting a new generation of sailors to draw inspiration from his example.
