Peruvian Navy modernizes BAP Antofagasta submarine

The Peruvian Navy has completed a major modernization of the BAP Antofagasta (SS-32), a Type 209/1200 German-origin submarine. The vessel was recently relaunched at the state-owned SIMA shipyard in Callao following an extensive update process that began in 2020.

In collaboration with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the project included precise hull modifications and the installation of advanced technology. Key upgrades include the capability to launch SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, the integration of the locally developed Kalpa combat management system, and the renewal of over 400 battery elements. These enhancements are expected to extend the submarine’s operational life by 15 to 20 years.

Separately, the Peruvian Navy commemorated the 115th anniversary of its Submarine Force. Established in 1911, the force made Peru the first country in Latin America to incorporate submarines into its navy. The ceremony, held at the Callao Naval Base, highlighted the force’s strategic role in maritime defense and national security.
