Peruvian police commander sentenced to 8 years in prison

A Peruvian judicial ruling has sentenced PNP Commander Manuel Antonio Canales Moscoso to eight years of effective prison time for the crime of disobedience and resistance to authority.

The incident occurred in May 2026 in the San Martín de Porres district, near the Parque del Trabajo station. Canales was caught driving a private vehicle through the Metropolitano’s exclusive transit lane while allegedly using a mobile phone. When traffic officers attempted to intervene, Canales reportedly refused to comply, citing his rank within the police force.

The confrontation escalated when Canales’s vehicle struck a traffic officer’s motorcycle. Prosecutors presented video evidence, officer testimonies, and reports from the PNP Inspectorate General to secure the conviction. In addition to the prison sentence, Canales must pay S/ 5,000 in civil reparations to the State.
