Peruvian Prime Minister's brother hired by the Institute of Sport

Jaime Desposorio Arroyo Sánchez, the 72‑year‑old elder brother of Prime Minister Luis Enrique Arroyo Sánchez, was awarded a service contract by the Instituto Peruano del Deporte (IPD) on 27 May 2026. The contract, worth S/ 6,000 for field‑support work with the National Directorate of Recreation and Promotion of Sport, resulted in an initial payment of S/ 3,000 before he withdrew from the assignment.

Arroyo Sánchez obtained a National Supplier Registry (RNP) on 5 May 2026, enabling his eligibility for the IPD invitation. His only prior public‑sector work consisted of two municipal service orders in 2017 for guard duties in Ascope, La Libertad. In his asset declarations, the prime minister had repeatedly listed his brother as having no occupation, marking “NO aplica”. Peruvian procurement rules restrict ministers from hiring close relatives, raising questions about the legality of the hiring.

The prime minister said he learned of the contract only after journalists inquired, and he expressed that he was unaware of his brother’s engagement with the IPD. The investigation was reported by the outlet Cuarto Poder, which was unable to interview Jaime Arroyo directly.
