Peruvian regional airport infrastructure and land use updates
In Peru, regional leaders and private sectors are calling for urgent infrastructure improvements and land management reforms regarding major airports in Jaén and Cusco.
In Jaén, representatives from Cajamarca and San Ignacio are formally requesting that the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) proceed with the comprehensive modernization of the Fernando Belaúnde Terry Airport. The facility has faced recurring issues since its runway reached the end of its useful life in June 2022. Despite approximately 10.8 million soles spent on various maintenance interventions, air traffic has seen a 99.86% reduction compared to 2019 levels. Local groups are seeking congressional oversight to ensure a definitive solution is implemented rather than continued temporary repairs.
In Cusco, Law No. 32533 has established a plan for the Velasco Astete Airport land. Once the new Chinchero International Airport becomes operational and Velasco Astete permanently closes, the approximately 100 hectares of land will be transferred to the Provincial Municipality of Cusco. The law mandates that this space be used exclusively for the creation of a metropolitan park to address the city's lack of green areas and prevent unplanned urban sprawl or real estate speculation.
