Peru's consumer‑protection chamber of Indecopi confirmed an administrative sanction against pharmaceutical laboratory Medifarma for distributing a defective batch of physiological serum (lot 2123624‑1) in March 2025. The defect caused at least seven deaths and serious health complications for other patients.
Indecopi upheld a fine of 450 UIT (about 2.475 million soles) and ordered Medifarma to cover medical expenses for surviving victims and funeral costs for the deceased. The company must also establish a response mechanism within ten days for unidentified claimants, publish notices in a national newspaper and on its website for six months, and submit quarterly progress reports for two years. Additionally, Medifarma is required to implement a compliance program with external audit to prevent future production failures. The firm may appeal the decision in court, and Indecopi warned that non‑compliance could trigger coercive fines.
