Peru shuts major avenues in Arequipa, Iquitos and Juliaca for road resurfacing projects

In Arequipa, the municipal government opened a 30‑day resurfacing of Avenida Goyeneche on 1 July, removing old cobbles and installing new asphalt over an 8,200 m² stretch. The road remains fully closed, prompting detours through Avenida Independencia, Avenida Venezuela and other side streets, and causing notable traffic congestion.

In Iquitos, contractors are paving the Mariscal Cáceres avenue from Tacna to Castilla. The project is 85 % complete and on schedule to finish by December 2026, with new drainage and soil‑cimentation work underway and utility relocation pending.

In Juliaca, work to convert Jirón Moquegua into a vehicular corridor has finished, but residents report ongoing insecurity at night around Parque 1 de Mayo. Missing safety barriers and non‑functional lighting have raised safety concerns, prompting calls for maintenance and police presence.
