Peruvian security forces clash with FARC dissidents near Colombia border
Peruvian military and police forces engaged in a clash with members of Los Comandos de la Frontera, a dissident faction of the former FARC, near the border with Colombia. The operation took place in the Putumayo province in northwestern Peru.
According to a statement from the Peruvian Ministry of Defense, the confrontation occurred following intelligence work that identified the group's location. During the engagement, three members of the group fell into the Yarica River while retreating. Authorities noted that the depth and rapid current of the river, combined with security conditions, have made search operations impossible.
During the operation, security forces seized an M16 rifle, two pistols, a grenade, ammunition, light combat equipment, military uniforms, and various medicines. While the FARC signed a peace agreement in 2016, several units rejected the deal and continue to engage in activities including drug trafficking, illegal mining, and extortion to fund their operations.
