Peruvian Senate faces political tension following verbal altercations
Political tensions are escalating in the Peruvian Senate following a series of confrontations within the Constitution Commission. Senator Edyson Morales of the Juntos por el Perú party has publicly demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Minister César Astudillo, describing a recent verbal altercation during a debate as “bochornoso” (shameful). The incident occurred during discussions regarding a bill to delegate legislative powers to the Executive branch in areas such as citizen security and El Niño prevention.
The conflict reportedly involved exchanges between Senator Iber Maraví and the Ministers of the Interior and Justice. Additionally, Senator Ruth Luque of the Ahora Nación party has accused the Fujimorismo bloc of refusing to recognize the results of a vote regarding the Senate's limits on legislative modifications. Luque stated that the opposition is attempting to force a rectification of the vote after losing a motion on a question of order, leading her to withdraw from the proceedings.
