Peruvian Senate opposition coalition disputes leadership vote amid accusations of betrayal

Senator Jaime Delgado of the Ahora Nación party said the opposition coalition broke its pact after List 2 lost the Senate Mesa Directiva election to the Miguel Torres‑led list. He described the incident as an “act of betrayal” by an unnamed member who allegedly did not respect the agreement among the four parties – Ahora Nación, Juntos por el Perú, Obras and Partido del Buen Gobierno – that pledged a unified ticket and block voting. Delgado said the coalition will remain united despite the setback.

Opposition senator Ruth Luque announced that the bloc will publicly display each member’s vote before it is deposited in the urn, citing the need for transparency. She warned that the vote could end in a 30‑30 tie and called for opening debate to address the procedural void, urging the Senate to find an exceptional solution.
