Peruvian Senator Mirtha Vásquez protests roof office without bathroom in new Congress

Senator Mirtha Vásquez of Peru publicly denounced the conditions of the office assigned to her for the 2026‑2031 parliamentary term. The workspace is a makeshift suite on a rooftop of the newly inaugurated bicameral Congress, built with drywall over a former storage area that had previously been declared uninhabitable. It consists of three rooms, lacks a private bathroom, and has walls with humidity and mold.

A video released by media outlets showed the cramped space, prompting other legislators, including Senator Alfonso López Chau, to label the conditions “insulting” and to request a review by the Office of the Mayor. The complaint comes amid scrutiny of the S/85 million spent on remodeling the new parliamentary complex.
