Peruvian Youth Leaders Demand Merit‑Based Appointments After Premier’s Lack of Degree

Youth leaders of the Provincial Youth Council of Azángaro, Joel Franklin Humana Yana and Cristian Machaca Choquehuanca, condemned the appointment of Luis Galarreta Velarde as premier, noting he holds only a high‑school diploma and has never earned a professional degree. They described the appointment as a mockery and highlighted that many professionals with master’s and doctoral degrees struggle to find state jobs, earning around S/1,500 a month.

The council called for merit‑based selection for public positions, proposing transparent public contests based on ability and experience rather than political patronage. They urged the government to create real opportunities for qualified professionals and to stop using youth as “cannon fodder” in political campaigns.
