Turkey political developments: Öcalan role and new constitution

In Turkey, political developments are centering on the potential role of Abdullah Öcalan in a peace process and internal party tensions within the AK Party.

DEM Party member Pervin Buldan has indicated that the next phase of the political process could involve Abdullah Öcalan taking on a coordination role for both disarmament and the political/democratic construction process. Buldan suggested that Öcalan could meet with various societal groups and conduct journalist interviews, potentially starting in October. This follows the passage of a framework law in Parliament, with eyes now on upcoming decisions from the National Security Council (MGK).

Separately, AK Party Istanbul Deputy Serkan Bayram has issued an apology to President Erdoğan and his party colleagues. His apology follows controversial remarks regarding fund investigations and specific party figures. Former Deputy Şamil Tayyar has defended Bayram, characterizing the incident as a “road accident” and praising his commitment to the rights of disabled citizens.

Additionally, the Turkish Parliament has entered a new legislative year with significant discussions regarding a new constitution. TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and President Erdoğan have both called for a new, democratic, and civilian constitutional framework to replace the existing one, which they argue carries traces of the 1980 coup era.
