Italy municipalities expand video surveillance to boost urban security
Numerous Italian municipalities are advancing projects to enhance urban security through expanded video surveillance systems. These initiatives, often coordinated by local Prefectures, aim to combat widespread and predatory crime by installing high-definition cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
In Mantua, 22 municipalities have been approved for 187 new installations, while in L'Aquila, 15 municipalities are moving forward with plans for 634 cameras. Similarly, 20 municipalities in the Milan hinterland and various centers in the Alessandria and Grosseto provinces have received technical approval for surveillance upgrades. In Siracusa, a major plan involving 132 cameras is being implemented with significant funding from European and national sources.
These projects are part of a broader national strategy involving 'Patti per la sicurezza urbana' (Urban Security Pacts), which allow local authorities to access Ministry of the Interior funds. The goal is to integrate technological tools with the work of law enforcement to improve public safety and territorial control.
