Pescara accessibility debate focuses on removing architectural barriers

A debate regarding commercial labeling and accessibility has emerged in Pescara, Italy, following proposals for “Negozio Italiano” (Italian Shop) and “Negozio Umano” (Human Shop) stickers. Claudio Ferrante, president of the association Carrozzine Determinate, has introduced a third concept: “Negozio Accessibile” (Accessible Shop).

Ferrante argues that the focus on slogans and political definitions distracts from the concrete issue of architectural barriers. He states that preventing people with disabilities from entering a shop violates their rights, dignity, and freedom. The association estimates that approximately 70% of shops may face such accessibility issues.

Carrozzine Determinate is calling for the creation of a permanent technical committee involving trade associations to identify critical areas and work toward the removal of physical barriers in commercial spaces.
