Pescara Hospital faces emergency department collapse amid staff shortages

Local politicians Domenico Pettinari, Massimiliano Di Pillo and Giovanni D’Andrea held a press conference in front of the Santo Spirito Hospital in Pescara, warning that the city’s health system is on the brink of collapse. They highlighted that patients are forced to remain on stretchers for days in the emergency department, elderly people are placed in corridors, and many wait hours or even days for admission.

The officials attributed the crisis to chronic under‑funding, insufficient hospital beds, a lack of long‑term care facilities for non‑self‑sufficient seniors, and severe staffing shortages that also affect specialized units such as the pediatric intensive care department. They called for immediate interventions and a complete overhaul of regional health planning.

The appeal was accompanied by gratitude toward doctors, nurses and support staff who continue to provide care despite the dire conditions.
