Pescara implements wild boar containment plan

Mayor Carlo Masci has issued an ordinance in Pescara to address a significant wild boar presence in urban and peri-urban areas. A recent census by hunting guards estimated approximately 186 wild boars residing in inhabited zones, including areas such as Fosso Vallelunga, Colle Pizzuto, and near local cemeteries.

The extraordinary containment and removal plan, which includes controlled culling, is scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2028. The initiative follows national and European directives aimed at preventing African Swine Fever (ASF). The local police will coordinate urban and road safety during operations, while authorized volunteer hunting guards will conduct the field interventions.

To support these efforts, the ordinance prohibits the direct or indirect feeding of wildlife and the abandonment of food waste. Landowners and residents in affected zones are instructed to maintain properties in a manner that does not encourage wild boar shelter or feeding, specifically regarding the management of organic waste and refuse accumulation.
