Italy faces diverse waste management challenges and policy shifts

Various regions in Italy are facing significant challenges and implementing new strategies regarding waste management. In Cosenza, nine mayors have appealed to the prefecture due to a crisis in plastic recycling caused by market failures and logistical bottlenecks, warning of potential environmental and health emergencies.

In Tuscany, political groups are calling for more local processing plants to reduce high per capita waste costs. Meanwhile, Umbria has adopted a new regional plan to shift from incineration to a circular economy model, aiming for 80% recycling by 2030.

Local municipalities are also tightening enforcement. Milan has issued over a thousand fines for illegal dumping, and Vibo Valentia is increasing inspections to penalize incorrect waste sorting. Conversely, Camporotondo di Fiastrone has seen reduced waste taxes due to high recycling rates. Technological advancements are also emerging, such as the new automated Sabar plant in Novellara using robotics for material separation, and the use of the Junker app in Pescara to allow citizens to report environmental issues in real-time.
