Pesticide contamination causes multiple intoxications in Bolivia and Argentina

Recent reports indicate separate incidents of pesticide-related poisoning in Bolivia and Argentina. In Bolivia, medical professionals reported that three minors, specifically children under five, suffered from intoxication after consuming food contaminated with pesticide residues. This follows a study by the NGO Ciudadanía, which detected 46 types of agrochemicals in vegetables sold in Cochabamba markets, including 31 substances classified as highly dangerous by the PAN International Network.

In Junín, Argentina, eight residents of La Colonia experienced symptoms of intoxication after inhaling or coming into contact with pesticide residues found in a vacant lot near their homes. Five individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while three remain under observation. Local authorities, including the Institute of Agricultural Health and Quality of Mendoza (Iscamen), are investigating the site, where nearly empty containers of organophosphates were discovered. Authorities are also investigating whether these substances are linked to the death of a dog found in the area.
