Pesticide exposure accelerates aging in fish
Researchers from the University of Notre Dame have discovered that chronic exposure to certain agricultural pesticides can accelerate the aging process in fish. The study, published in the journal Science, highlights that even low-level, persistent exposure to chemicals can have cumulative negative impacts on animal lifecycles.
Lead biologist Jason Rohr and researcher Kai Huang conducted the study by combining field observations with laboratory experiments. They analyzed over 20,000 specimens of the ‘skygazer’ species across various lakes in China. The research specifically focused on chlorpyrifos, a widely used insecticide.
The findings demonstrate that chlorpyrifos damages telomeres—the structures responsible for protecting DNA and marking biological age—thereby shortening the lifespan of the fish. This research shifts the focus from immediate high-dose toxicity to the long-term biological consequences of chronic chemical exposure.
