Pet adoption and responsible ownership initiatives highlighted in Chile and Ecuador

In observance of Adopted Dog Day, efforts to promote pet adoption and responsible ownership are being highlighted in Chile and Ecuador.

In Chile, reports from the Subsecretaría de Desarrollo Regional y Administrativo (Subdere) indicate that over 3.4 million dogs without known owners are roaming without homes, a figure that may be higher due to the age of the last official measurement. Experts emphasize that successful adoption requires more than impulsive charity; it necessitates a cultural shift toward responsible ownership to prevent failed adoptions caused by incompatibilities in space, time, or behavior.

In Ecuador, the company Mundo Mágico de la Mascota reported that 219 pets have found homes through its adoption drives so far in 2026. The organization collaborates with animal protection groups to host monthly events across the country. To ensure effective placement, interested parties must undergo an interview and complete a registration process, receiving an introductory kit to assist with the initial transition period.
