Pet behavior and development: ancestral instincts and teething
Domestic pets like dogs and cats exhibit ancestral behaviors rooted in their DNA. Research from the University of Lincoln indicates that daily actions such as digging or chasing are remnants of ancestral hunting and survival practices. Dogs utilize complex visual and olfactory signals for social communication, while cats rely on scent marking to define territory and interact with other felines.
During the developmental stage of puppyhood, specifically between two and six months, teething becomes a significant physiological phase. As deciduous teeth fall out to make room for permanent ones, puppies experience inflamed gums and discomfort. This leads to chewing behaviors intended to alleviate pain through pressure, rather than out of disobedience. Providing appropriate chew toys and managing the environment can help mitigate damage to household items during this transition.
