Pet care industry expands as household spending on animal wellness rises

The pet care industry is expanding as animals are increasingly viewed as family members in South American households. In Buenos Aires, there is a growing variety of specialized services ranging from behavioral and nutritional support to alternative wellness practices like reiki and astrology, as well as therapeutic grooming for dermatological health.

In Chile, the economic impact of pet ownership has risen significantly. According to data from the National Chamber of Commerce (CNC), the proportion of households with recurring pet expenses grew from 35.1% to 39.8% between 2016 and 2022. The average monthly expenditure per household has increased by 62.7%, rising from $36,900 to $60,100. Veterinary health now accounts for approximately one-quarter of these budgets, while spending on services such as grooming, daycare, and walking has nearly doubled.
