Pet Care Market Expands in Brazil and Portugal

In Alagoas, Brazil, the pet sector has surged 71.34% over the past five years, reaching 2,265 active companies by early 2025. The growth is highlighted by the second edition of the Exposição Arena Pet, held from August 6‑9 at Maceió Shopping, featuring free‑entry seminars, panels, exotic animal displays, business fairs, vaccination and adoption drives, and environmental education activities. Brazil’s pet industry generated roughly R$ 78 billion in 2025, placing the country third worldwide after the United States and China.

In Portugal, the ZU brand of the Sonae group has acquired seven former PetOutlet stores across the north and Algarve regions, bringing its total to 82 outlets, 24 of which include integrated veterinary clinics. The expansion adds to ten organic openings already completed in 2026, raising the company’s workforce to over 400 employees. The new locations are situated in high‑traffic power centers and supermarkets, supporting ZU’s strategy of mixed organic and acquisition‑driven growth in the Portuguese pet‑care market.
