Pet emergency kits recommended for Chilean residents
In response to risks such as intense rains, floods, forest fires, and earthquakes in Chile, experts are emphasizing the importance of preparing emergency kits specifically for pets. Dr. Ana Francisca Soto, a veterinarian and ethologist from Universidad Andrés Bello, notes that including animals in emergency planning reduces improvisation during stressful evacuations.
Following SENAPRED recommendations, a pet emergency kit should cover basic needs for at least 48 hours. Essential items include:
• Documentation: Veterinary ID, proof of registration in the National Pet Registry, medical prescriptions, and a recent photograph to assist in identification if the animal is lost. • Food and Water: Sufficient supplies for 48 hours, including specialized diets for animals with specific health requirements. • Medical Supplies: First aid items such as gauze and saline solution, along with a reserve of any recurring medications for animals with chronic illnesses.
